Treating AI as a full replacement for human judgment. The highest-value automation configurations use AI to handle volume and routing, with humans handling the cases that require genuine judgment. Design your automations with human-in-the-loop checkpoints for anything consequential.


The Decision Framework: Build, Buy, or Wait?

For any automation you’re considering:

Build if: the task is specific to your business process, the volume is high enough to justify setup time, and you have or can build the technical knowledge to maintain it.

Buy (an off-the-shelf solution) if: the task is standard enough that a purpose-built SaaS tool handles it well. For example, many email follow-up tools and invoicing platforms have automation built in — don’t build in Make.com what a $20/month SaaS tool already does.

Wait if: the task is still evolving (automating a process you’re still figuring out wastes the setup investment), or the volume doesn’t yet justify the build time.
